Our Principles

Our principles guide our approach to discussion with all others, and to our negotiations with the Crown for the resolution of our Treaty of Waitangi claims. We expect the Crown to negotiate with us in good faith by adhering to these principles.

Whakatika / Recognition

Whakatika - recognition

Recognition of the WAI56 owners as the tāngata whenua of the Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay area, as identified by the Native Land Court in 1893; and of the specific Treaty breaches that have affected our lands and people.

Recognition of our strong history as prudent and responsible land administrators.

Utunga / Restitution

Whakatika - recognition

Restitution to the large distinct group that held the strongest manawhenua on the lands that led to the establishment of the Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay settlements. Appropriate and fair redress that recognises our significant losses.

Whakaritenga / Resolution

Whakatika - recognition

Resolution – so that the next generation of our families can move forward without the burden of having to engage with the Crown on these matters. Durable, robust and final settlement to resolve the intergenerational losses suffered over the centuries.

Whakapono / Good Faith

Whakatika - recognition

The underlying intent to act with honesty and respect is the foundation to achieving a successful conclusion to our discussions - transparency and openness is fundamental to this conclusion.

Mana Ōrite / Equality

Whakatika - recognition

Equal treatment and freedom from discrimination is the hallmark of a society’s commitment to human rights and is a testament to our future nationhood.
